WP Dashboard on Mobile

Alright, so you are a blogger. (You’re not? Holy shite! Its best for you if you scroll down and read the other nice arties… like the review of Michio Kaku’s book, or  terribly interesting bit that says Creative Commons License -theres a world of possibilities out there, you know) And every once in a while, while not at home you have this urge to write a blog post, or moderate comments, or do other blogger only shit of the same kind, while you could instead be listening to music, playing GTA Chinatown Wars, or chatting to your friend next to you who has been trying unsuccessfully since the past hour to draw your attention towards him. (If youre still reading this, reader-who-wont-get-a-word-of-whats-to-come, heres a fun fact: Bloggers fall in love with their blogs, no matter how much others say it sucks, or how much the author drives away users by saying that his content is irrelevant)

Or forget all that, even if you think you don’t really need to write on the go, or your mobile phone doesn’t have a QWERTY keyboard and stuff, the more pressing matter is making your blog mobile friendly. That means that your blog can detect mobile browsers and redirects them to a page called m.YourBlogHere.com which is lightweight and mobile friendly. If you don’t know how any of this is done (Haven’t googled hard enough, or just find it easier to get in one place), or you forgot that this could be done, just Read on.

Making Your WordPress Blog Mobile Friendly

Note: As apparent, the following is only needed for self-hosted WordPress blogs. Blogs using free WordPress.Com hosting have the functionality enabled by default.

This is, definitely, the most important thing you need to do. If not installed, when accessed via a standard mobile browser, your blog would typically take ages to load, and even after that, chances are that no one would be able to make head or tail out of it. Also, trying to use your dashboard from mobile is downright impossible. However, as obvious (if there wasn’t a way I wouldn’t be blogging about it), there is an easy way to get around this. And that is simply, install this rich, feature laden plugin called the WordPress Mobile Pack.

The plugin in question provides mobile themes, automatic platform detection and switching, a mobile dashboard (which is very cool, mind you) and a whole lot of other awesome goodies. And ergo, the first method of editing your posts is via the mobile browser, and we come to it now:

WordPress through the Browser

The way you’ll want to be using from your standard mobile browser is almost completely explained in the section above. Just install the plugin, and you have your dashboard accessible from mobile. The next, terribly obvious step you do is just point your blog to http://example.com/wp-admin/ and sign in. Thats about it.

Or you could, ofcourse, use the standard blog by email thing and blog from your mailbox, but I don’t see why any one in their right (Or partially right even) minds would do that.

Blogging using a Mobile App: JAVA (MIDP 2.0)

This app is what I found last week for  my phone. My phone is a Corby Plus, and I admit it : I bought it just for the looks. It can run only Jar apps, and while that is usually not much of a problem, some times it is mildly irritating. Like an itch you can’t reach. But however, for all purposes of blogging, this app works fine: (Note: It can be used with Joomla, Blogger, etc too)

Mopress– Java Mobile Blogging Platform

All you do is install and run the app, and then connect it to your blog. The advantage in this is that the post is stored locally, until you publish the post, or send it as a draft. So for the balance conscious, it can be useful. However, the browser method is also quite lightweight, so you don’t need this app that much really.

WordPress for Android / Blackberry

Havent tried any of this ( part of the reason may be because I don’t have an Android/Blackberry phone), but you may very well do so and provide feedback.

Blogger through SMS

Click here to read instructions. Why am I posting this link? Idk. There is no WordPress feature of the kind, though, so those looking for this will be disappointed. However, I don’t see any practical use of such a thing. I would probably exceed the length of one in 2 sentences of mine. =|

I sincerely hope that helped. And if it didn’t,… like really, user-who-doesnt-blog? Did you have to read this post just to annoy me, though you know it won’t help you?
