As promised in my previous post, some of my blog specs:
The Host: www.speedhost.in, 1 GB webhosting, 15 GB monthly bandwidth, cPanel
I bought the domain name, along with a humble 1 GB of webhosting as soon as I came back from school on the 15th. I thought that it would take a day for processing, but actually I got the email confirmation and my cPanel id and password within seconds.
The Platform: WordPress 2.9.2
And so I started with installing WordPress 2.9.2 first. I imported my blog from WordPress.com, using the nifty export feature. And then I downloaded some themes, installed one of them and clicked on the editor button.
It was like entering the Total Perspective Vortex. In my usual way of missing the most exciting bits of the current situation, I had forgotten that I had FULL control over the appearance of my theme and other elements of my website. EverĀ sinceĀ I had started Akshatb.Wordpress.Com, I had drooled over the fact that you could customize your CSS and individual webpages to get the look you want. There is a free feature in wordpress.com that lets you try this thing, but since you can’t save it, I was too lazy to try. And now that I had it, I even forgot that it existed
The Theme: Imprezz by Productivedreams.com
After a lot of time messing around with a lot of themes, I settled on Imprezz. The theme is clean, has two sidebars and the colour scheme looks really good. However, there were quite a few flaws with this. There were minor ones, such as no listing of categories under the post title, overlapping of categories with post titles, no link to “older entries”, etc that were sorted out by some improvised php. Not to mention that the designer had left links to his twitter id and website in various nooks and crannies around the page which had to be cleaned up. But to say thankyou for this theme, i’m linking them to this post anyway. But the most irritating thing is, that I can’t widgetize my sidebar without removing what’s already there. And even after a lot of CSS editing, I couldnot get the widgets to look like the php coded sidebar divisions. Hence, I will now have to configure my sidebars entirely through coding.
The Rest
I also use around 15 plugins, though I doubt I’ll remember that I had any of them in a few months, leave a few. Till now, the plugins that stand out are Zemanta and the Thank Me Later plugin. I still haven’t tried all,and experimentation is still on so I’ll still wait and watch.
